Author Patrick Middleton began his journey to self-transformation in 1978 while serving a life sentence for second-degree robbery-homicide. Entering the University of Pittsburgh’s in-house college program at Western Penitentiary located on the North Side of the city of Pittsburgh, he quickly discovered a passion for learning about the workings of the human mind, particularly how humans learn and “unlearn.” After earning his Bachelor’s degree in English (summa cum laude) in 1983, he went on to enter Pitt’s Graduate School of Education where he earned his Master’s degree in Language Communication in 1985, and his doctorate in Instruction and Learning in1990, becoming the first and only prisoner in America to earn a Ph.D. in a classroom setting.
Dr. Middleton has over 35 years of experience in creating and implementing reading, writing and math skills assessment programs for entering freshman college students. He has taught undergraduate and graduate students in the University of Pittsburgh and Villanova University’s in-house prison college programs.
Today, he facilitates Inside-Out/SMART Recovery sessions, and is fast at work on creating the first curriculum in present moment awareness training for prisoners. He is the author of two instructor’s manuals in psychology; a memoir, INCORRIGIBLE; and a literary novel, EUREKA MAN. His new groundbreaking self-help book, THE POWER OF CHANGE, A Guide to Self-Transformation for Incarcerated Men and Women, is based on the premise that the antidote to ending a life of crime and self-destruction can be found by discovering and cultivating self-awareness, which leads to self-understanding, ego control, and the gradual end to impulsive decision-making.
